James DeBruhl of Camden congratulates Margaret Lloyd on being awarded the Ruby C. McSwain Outstanding Philanthropist Award by the National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association. The award was presented to Lloyd during a September 14th reception hosted by Clemson University. Clemson was officially acknowledging Lloyd’s gift of 870 acres of natural habitat on the Wateree River south of Camden and two million dollars.

Clemson will establish an environmental education center on the property as what Provost Dori Helms labeled “the centerpiece of one our eight areas of emphasis: Sustainable Environment.” Representatives from the City of Camden, the Kershaw County School District, the Chamber of Commerce, various supporters of the environment and numerous personal friends were on hand to help honor Lloyd.

This feature offers a look back at stories and photos from the Kershaw County Current archives. Each month we highlight past coverage, preserving the people, places and events that have shaped our community.
