Smoke rose over the Camden Battlefield last week — not from battle, but from a carefully planned prescribed burn.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission conducted the operation as part of a long-term effort to restore the landscape to its 1780 appearance, when open longleaf pine savannas defined the terrain.

The burn also improves wildlife habitat and reduces wildfire risk.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission conducted a prescribed burn at the Camden Battlefield as part of a long-term effort by the Historic Camden Foundation, the American Battlefield Trust and Liberty Trail partners to gradually restore the landscape to what historians believe it looked like in 1780.

The foundation now preserves roughly 800 acres — a dramatic expansion from just six acres in 1942 — and leaders say the goal is to convert much of that land from dense secondary growth into open pine savanna consistent with the Revolutionary War-era battlefield.

Forestry Commission personnel carried out the burn with military-like precision. Crews ignited fires designed to move toward established fire breaks, maintaining spacing of roughly 20 yards between team members as they walked assigned lines to designated stopping points before exiting to the perimeter.

Once interior lines had burned out, crews set additional perimeter fires, allowing wind to push flames back toward previously burned areas to ensure thorough coverage.

Safety was the priority throughout the operation, with careful coordination balancing mission accomplishment with personnel welfare. A Kershaw County Fire Service firefighter stood by with a pumper truck in support.

Three members of the National Weather Service observed the burn. The agency provides the meteorological data the Forestry Commission relies on to develop safe burn plans. Officials said attending in person helps them better understand how their forecasting supports field operations and may improve future coordination.

Officials indicated additional burns may be conducted in the coming days or weeks to address areas that did not fully clear during the initial operation.
