Seventeen students enrolled in the Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC) nursing program won medals in statewide health occupations competition held March 14-16 in North Charleston.
The students brought home 11 gold medals, five silver and one bronze from the post-secondary competition sponsored by the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), a national leadership organization for students enrolled in healthrelated programs.
Students enrolled in phases one and two of ATEC’s nursing program participated. Medal winners are eligible to compete in the national competition scheduled for late June in Orlando, Fla. ATEC’s nursing students are raising funds to attend the conference.
Gold medal winners were Wendy Carter, Pamela Catoe and Jessica McIntyre, all in health education. Also, Brittany Gray, Lindsey Hunter and Derek Matthews, all in community awareness and Jackie Craft in nutrition.
Other gold medal winners were Mary Day and Kathy Stines in career health display; Sonny Culbreath in job-seeking skills and Alexis Lovell in pathophysiology.
Silver medal winners were Nikki Adams in medial spelling; Kelly Baccomo in medical terminology, Vincent Watson in medical math, Donna Wiggins in prepared speaking and Krichelle Wilson in extemporaneous health poster. Courtney Dixon won a bronze medal in medical spelling.
“We are very proud of our nursing program and their students here at ATEC,” says director Allen Teal. “They excel not only in the classroom but also outside the classroom in competitions like this.”
ATEC’s nursing program is coordinated by Sharon Clyburn, who is a phase two instructor along with Doris Gainey. Tammy Pugh is the phase one instructor.
