Camden Military Academy held a solemn military dress parade Thursday, Sept. 11, to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and recognize the service of local first responders.

The ceremony, marking the 24th anniversary of 9/11, began at 2 p.m. on Martain Parade Field, located on the Academy’s campus. Cadets marched in full military dress before a large crowd of families, alumni and community members. Firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers and representatives from the Department of Natural Resources turned out in strong numbers to stand alongside the cadets.

For many in attendance, the event served as both a remembrance and a call to service. “Marching today gave me a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made on 9/11 and reminded me of the responsibility we have as future leaders,” said Cadet 1LT Cason Pickett.

Academy officials emphasized the importance of teaching cadets that reflection on 9/11 must also include gratitude for those who continue to serve. “This parade was not just about looking back on what happened in 2001 but it was about showing gratitude to the men and women who keep us safe here at home,” said LTC Casey Robinson, Dean of Enrollment and Administration.

Local first responders said the recognition was meaningful. “It means a lot to be honored in this way,” said a Camden firefighter who attended with colleagues. “We come out every day to serve our community, and to see these young cadets show their respect reminds us that our work is valued.”

The annual parade underscores Camden Military Academy’s mission of instilling values of honor, duty and respect in its cadets. With the presence of both first responders and community members, Thursday’s ceremony became not only a reflection on a national tragedy but also a living demonstration of unity in Kershaw County.
