DESCRIPTION:Once a month\, the Rev War Center offers a free homeschool day where small school groups can come together and experience one of the educational programs offered by the Center. A minimum of ten students will be needed to host these educational programs\, if the minimum is not met then parents will be notified a week prior that the program will be canceled. \nPrograms are geared toward students in 3rd grade through high school. Younger students are welcome to attend and follow along\, but will need the assistance of their guardian throughout the program. The event is free and open to the public\, with books available for purchase on site. \nWho: Vincent Sheheen is the Mayor of Camden\, SC; an attorney; and a former state senator. He was a member of the South Carolina State Senate from 2004-2020\, representing the 27th District. He was also a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2001-2004. He is the co-host of the popular SC politics podcast Bourbon in the Backroom\, and has published numerous essays\, articles\, and the book\, The Right Way: Getting the Palmetto State Back on Track. \nWhy: “No current book explains South Carolina state government\, its structure\, and its history\,” Sheheen says. DESCRIPTION:January 17\, 2026 | 11:00 am – 1:00 pm \nMultiple community organizations gather\, alongside community officials and student representatives from across Kershaw County\, to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s birthday during the 5th annual MLK Unity Day Celebration on Saturday\, Jan. 17\, 2026. \nThe celebration kicks off at 11 a.m. with a gathering at the African American Cultural Center of Camden\, located at 517 York St. Following the gathering\, attendees will proceed with a commemorative march at 11:30 a.m.\, ending at Camden City Hall\, 1000 Lyttleton St.\, where the celebration program will commence at noon. This year’s theme is “His Dream Is Ours.” \nThe event is organized each year by the Concerned Citizens of Kershaw County (CCKC)\, in partnership with the Camden-Kershaw County Branch of the NAACP\, Unity in the Community\, Concerned Clergy of Kershaw County\, the African American Cultural Center of Camden\, and the City of Camden. \nAttendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the program at City Hall. Organizations\, chapters and civic groups are invited to march. Donors or sponsors of this celebration of unity are invited to call MLK Unity Day Chair Ann Davis at 803-427-1077.
