SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: A Meteor Shining Brightly
DESCRIPTION:Said to be the ugliest man in Britain\, Lord Rawdon’s climb to Lieutenant Colonel during the American Revolution may have come as a surprise to many.  This Irish lord impressed Sir Henry Clinton and General Cornwallis with his leadership and strategy skills. Lord Rawdon occupied the city of Camden for 11 months during the American Revolution and only fell back towards Charleston\, not because he had lost a battle\, but due to insufficient troops and supplies. \n2023-2024 SC Teacher of the Year\, Mike Burgess once again returns to the Rev War Visitor Center to share Lord Rawdon’s story. Bring your lunch and get to know the British commander in charge during the Battle of Hobkirk’s Hill. \n(You bring your lunch and  we will provide the learning opportunity!) \n RSVP @ simplyrevolutionary.com

SUMMARY:Thursday Talk Taverns: The Original Social Network of Colonial America
DESCRIPTION:Long before social media\, taverns were the bustling nerve centers of colonial life—places where every spoonful of stew and sip of switchel carried news\, shaped opinions\, and forged powerful alliances. More than simple eateries\, these lively hubs connected farmers\, merchants\, travelers\, and politicians alike. \nGathered around warm hearths\, locals and visitors shared hearty meals—think stews\, salted meats\, and fresh bread—sourced from the land and sea. With mugs of switchel\, shrubs\, cider\, and herbal infusions in hand\, conversations sparked everything from local gossip to revolutionary ideas. \nMistress Katie Hamilton-Smith\, a lifelong history enthusiast and former tavern mistress of the iconic Rising Sun Tavern in Fredericksburg\, Virginia\, takes you inside the vibrant social ecosystem of 18th-century taverns—where community was built\, power was brokered\, and everyday life laid the groundwork for a nation. \n RSVP @ simplyrevolutionary.com

SUMMARY:Camden Chat & Chew: The 1895 Segregation Fight in South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:This story\, long buried in old newspaper accounts\, tells the forgotten saga of the six brave men who tried to stop the segregation laws from passing in South Carolina.  For three months\, six Black leaders of the Reconstruction era argued eloquently at the State Constitutional Convention in the face of vile threats\, racial insults\, and united opposition\, against enactment of the Jim Crow laws. \nThis struggle would inspire those who remembered this incident and will inspire those who hear it today. Damon Fordham\, adjunct professor at the Citadel in Charleston\, comes to Camden to share the story of these six men and their fight for equality under the law. \n(You bring your lunch and we will provide the learning opportunity!)
