The Concise Guide to South Carolina State Government Book Launch Event

Former State Senate member, House Representative, and current Mayor of Camden Vincent Sheheen hosts a book talk, Q&A, and book signing for his newly released work

Camden, South Carolina

When: Tuesday, January 27th, 2026, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

Where: Sheheen Colonial Artisan Center at Historic Camden, 222 Broad Street, Camden, SC, 29020.

What: Books on Broad will be hosting an event to commemorate the release of his new book, The Concise Guide to South Carolina State Government, published by the University of South Carolina Press.

The event will begin with a talk by Mayor Sheheen explaining the origins, purpose, and scope of the book, followed by an audience Q&A and book signing. The event is free and open to the public, with books available for purchase on site.

Who: Vincent Sheheen is the Mayor of Camden, SC; an attorney; and a former state senator. He was a member of the South Carolina State Senate from 2004-2020, representing the 27th District. He was also a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2001-2004. He is the co-host of the popular SC politics podcast Bourbon in the Backroom, and has published numerous essays, articles, and the book, The Right Way: Getting the Palmetto State Back on Track.

Why: “No current book explains South Carolina state government, its structure, and its history,” Sheheen says. This is the first, essential, nonpartisan reading experience to document the body’s founding, evolution over time, and configuration in its modern state, providing a comprehensive outlook on South Carolina state government operation from its genesis to the current day.

The functions of the three branches of state government, state agencies, as well as local governments are all examined with an insight that only someone who has walked the corridors of the State House in Columbia can provide.
